MOOSE — a model dog

Moose, a yellow Labrador, has all the attributes of a full-time boatyard dog, even though he’s a part timer, says his companion, Bob Knecht of Cousins Island. “Moose spends a goodly amount of his life during spring boat-prep sleeping under the boat when he isn’t roaming around the yard scrounging sandwich parts from other boat owners.

“Being a true Lab, he is a great yard diplomat and does a sterling job of zealously greeting anyone who will make eye contact with him. He’s a salty dog too. Nothing suits him more than hanging his head over the gunwale of our Beals Island 22 at 30 knots, head into the wind, taking blasts of sea air up each nostril, his ears flapping for takeoff.”

On land, when Moose visits downtown Freeport, he is sometimes mistaken for one of the dog models in the L.L. Bean catalog. “My son and I have been known to claim that he is,” says Knecht, “but if the truth be known, the closest Moose ever came to being associated with L.L. Bean was back in 2002, when he ate their spring catalog.” (June–July 2005)
